Many computer scientists think geeks do not need proper writing skills as they must only focus on math and science. This is completely inaccurate. I will share with you, a few reasons why I think writing is essential for geeks, like myself.
A large part of programming is logging what you are doing, being able to find bugs and having other programmers understand what you did and why you did it. When you finally find a job in programming, you are not only programming for yourself. You have to be able to communicate yourself effectively, so that others can follow your code and critique or edit it. Also, you may encounter a bug that seems quite impossible to find. Keeping a detailed log of what you have changed or what you have tried to fix the bug is very beneficial and would help you get the job done.
At first (like many others, I'm sure), I was a little annoyed when I found out I would have to keep updating a blog for this course. But, after contemplation, I realized that this blog will actually be very beneficial to me and other students. Keeping track of what you have learned, what you struggled with and how you are going to try and improve and really thinking about these things will make me a better geek.
Thanks for reading.
